How To Position Your Security Cameras For A 360-Degree View Around Your Home

Posted on

Installing security cameras yourself can be challenging. You need to make adjustments to each of the cameras so that they are catching images in all of the places you want to view around your house. You may need some extra help so that you are not bolting the cameras to one spot and then realizing you need to make new holes because the camera's view is not right. You also need to consider the position of each camera so you get that three-hundred-sixty-degree view you are looking for. Here is how to do that the right way the first time.

Small House? Eight Cameras Should Work

If you have a smaller home, around 1200-1600 sq. feet, then eight stationary security cameras should do the trick. (If your house is bigger, you will need several more. Consider adding two extra cameras for every corner or odd angle where you cannot see something looking out of a window.)

Now, install your eight cameras like this:

  1. Fix one above or close to the door and the front porch. You should see who is at your front door at all times.
  2. Fix the next one at the corner of the house near the porch. Now you can see who is approaching, leaving, and lobbing things at your house.
  3. Fix the next one on the side of your house, especially if it is a very long side. The camera should show you a view of everything alongside the house and up to eight or ten feet of yard.
  4. Fix the next two on a back corner of your house, with one trained right on the back door, if applicable, and the other on your back yard. If you have a detached garage, this is where you focus one of these two cameras.
  5. Fix two on the next corner of your house, with one facing out over that corner of the back yard and another facing the side of the house. You should be able to see this entire corner of your lot and the side of your home.
  6. Fix the last camera onto the final corner of your home, and position it so that it can see everybody and everything approaching your house from the front and side of your property.

Once you have all of these cameras loosely positioned, check their lens views. You should be able to see all the way around your home and your property. If you do not, adjust the cameras that are not in sync with the sight lines of the rest. Then securely bolt the cameras into place. For more information, contact local professionals like Safeway Security Systems.
