Top 3 Mistakes To Avoid During A CCTV System Installation

Posted on

Considering the rising crime rates, installing CCTV cameras in your home or business is no longer a luxury. It's a necessity. Imagine how much you would lose if burglars broke into your home and made away with everything you have worked so hard for.

However, for your CCTV cameras to be effective, they should be properly installed. Below are three mistakes to avoid during a CCTV system installation.

Purchasing Inferior Quality Cameras

Everybody wants to save money, but installing cheap and low-quality cameras will likely cost you significantly in the long run. If burglars break into your home, but your 2MP cameras cannot get good shots of the criminals' faces or car license plates, it will be more difficult to catch the criminals or recover the stolen property.

Also, it's important to note that image enhancement isn't typically available. You have probably seen a movie where detectives blow up images from security cameras, flip them around, and enhance the resolution to get a clear image of the killer. However, in reality, this doesn't work. While CCTV systems usually have digital zoom, you can only adjust the pixels to what is already there in the footage. Therefore, invest in high-resolution cameras as you'll get better image quality.

Not Installing Enough Cameras

If you're installing CCTV cameras to see when your children arrive home from school or when the mailman arrives with the package, then having one or two cameras is fine. But if you want full protective coverage on your large apartment, you'll need more than two cameras. If criminals get to know you only have a few cameras, they can easily evade them and get into your home.

Ideally, install cameras in all the areas criminals might pass through to access your home. These may include your front door, back and side doors, main stairway, hallway, garage, and driveway. You may also need surveillance cameras in common rooms like the kitchen or living room, as well as the yard to monitor your kids as they play.

Improper Positioning of CCTV Cameras

The positioning of CCTV cameras strongly influences the quality of the footage. Avoid a spot that has obstructions like trees and lighting poles. Also, consider the sun's position to ensure sunlight's glare doesn't blind the viewing angle during specific times of the day.

Generally, CCTV cameras should be installed under a roof at a downward angle. This ensures they are protected from direct sunlight and other elements. Professional CCTV installers can also identify other vantage points throughout your property to place the cameras. To learn more, contact a security system installation company.
